How to Check Criminal History in Henderson County
Begin with the official source closest to the event. The Henderson County case-search route leads to the county's Odyssey Judicial Record Search. District cases cover felony prosecutions, while the County Clerk Criminal Division is the key clerk channel for misdemeanors. A portal result is an index lead. Confirm the cause number, court, filed charge, status, and disposition with the clerk before treating it as a full case record. For present custody, the jail line at 903-677-6322 answers a different question. The arresting agency, not always the sheriff, keeps its own offense or arrest report.
Bring a full legal name, date of birth when lawfully available, spelling variants, a rough date, and the city or agency involved. A cause number or report number is stronger than a name alone. Work through the layers in this order:
- Search the Henderson County judicial portal for a filed felony or misdemeanor case, then note the cause number and assigned court.
- Call the jail for current local custody, or use the official county jail-search link when it is available.
- Ask the arresting police department or sheriff for its incident or arrest report when the event narrative is needed.
- Check Texas DPS public criminal history for reported statewide convictions and deferred adjudications.
- Request a docket, judgment, or certified copy from the correct clerk when the result must be verified.
Henderson County records then move through a clear chain: incident or arrest report → jail booking → prosecutor review → filed court case → clerk-reported disposition → DPS criminal-history update. A missing link can leave one system behind another.
Henderson County Criminal Record Offices
Athens is the county seat, but its record counters are not interchangeable. The District Clerk keeps district felony case files at the historic courthouse. The County Clerk Criminal Division handles misdemeanor records and supports the county courts with warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and commitments. The sheriff and jail sit on North Murchison Street and keep sheriff-created law-enforcement and custody records. A courtroom may be in the courthouse or the Corsicana Street judicial building, yet the filing custodian can still be the District Clerk.

Email District Clerk copy requests to dcfile@henderson-county.com. Certified copy payment is a second step, using bureau code 7414578 when the clerk directs it. The payment portal by itself does not order or identify a document.
Note: Call ahead about parking, building screening, recording rules, accessibility details, and document fees because the cited county pages do not publish them.
Official Texas Background Checks
The Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Records Division maintains the Computerized Criminal History system. Its public Criminal History Search releases conviction and deferred-adjudication information that DPS has received and that Government Code Section 411.135 makes public. It is not a complete subject-only rap sheet. Public users create a CRD Secure Website account and buy search credits. DPS warns that a name-only match can point to the wrong person, so a date of birth, middle name, and other lawful identifiers matter.
The DPS public criminal-history instructions explain the scope, credits, and match limits shown in the interface.
The instruction screen is the best place to confirm the current public product before spending a credit or relying on a name match.
For self-review, fingerprints are the stronger identity key. Texas FAST uses IdentoGO by IDEMIA enrollment centers. A purpose-specific service code determines the authorized workflow, destination, and price, so the code must come from the Texas program requesting the fingerprints. Federal self-review is separate: the FBI Identity History Summary process accepts an application and fingerprints through the FBI's own channel.
Henderson County DPS Record Search
DPS account registration and payment occur before the public search. The CRD Secure Website signup page is the official account entry point.
The account screen confirms that the public name search is an authenticated DPS service, not a county clerk search.
Once signed in, use as many accurate identifiers as the search permits. Common names raise the risk of a false match. The authenticated form controls can change, but the researched fields and fees establish what a Henderson County searcher should prepare.
| Field or cost | How it helps | Verified detail |
|---|---|---|
| Last and first name | Core name match | Use the full legal spelling |
| Middle name | Narrows common names | Optional or form-dependent |
| Date of birth | Strong demographic match | Use the exact date when known |
| Sex and race | Additional narrowing | Options depend on the live form |
| Online credit | Runs one search | $1, plus card purchase charges |
| Mailed CR-42 | Paper public search | $10 by check or U.S. money order |
A credit-card purchase adds 2.25 percent per credit and a $0.25 transaction charge. One credit permits a search and viewing one or more records returned by that search. Neither price changes the legal scope of the public product.
Types of Criminal Records
One Henderson County event can create several criminal records. The responding agency writes an incident report. An arresting officer creates arrest and probable-cause material. Jail staff create booking, fingerprint, bond, property, and custody entries. A prosecutor may later file a complaint, information, or seek an indictment. The appropriate clerk then keeps the case docket, filings, judgment, and sentence. DPS receives qualifying fingerprint-supported arrest and disposition data for the statewide history.
Knowing the custodian prevents false conclusions:
- Incident and police reports belong to the sheriff, city police department, constable, campus police, or DPS unit that made them.
- Booking records describe intake charges, bond, release, and local custody rather than the final court outcome.
- Criminal court files show filed counts, hearings, pleas, motions, disposition, and sentence.
- Warrant and capias records may sit with the issuing court and the agency assigned to serve them.
- Supervision and registry records are split among Henderson County CSCD, TDCJ, the parole system, local registration authorities, and DPS.
Fine-only municipal matters can stay in Athens, Gun Barrel City, Chandler, or another issuing municipal court. A county felony search cannot rule them out. Likewise, a city police report does not move into the sheriff's report files merely because a person later enters a county jail.
Henderson County Booking Record Flow
At the Murchison Street jail, a custodial arrest moves through identity intake, a property inventory, fingerprints and a photograph, database and warrant checks, charge entry, medical screening, classification, magistration, and either housing, release, or transfer. Texas requires an arrested person to be taken before a magistrate without unnecessary delay and within 48 hours. That ceiling is not a promise of release. The magistrate handles warnings, probable cause, counsel, and bail issues.
The official Henderson County Odyssey system includes a county jail-search endpoint, though access was intermittent during research. When it fails, call the jail at 903-677-6322 for current custody. The sheriff page does not publish a separate official mobile app, so similarly named third-party apps should not be treated as county sources.
A jail charge is the allegation entered at intake. Prosecutors can file a different count, reduce it, decline it, or present a felony matter to a grand jury. Check the court after booking. The resulting Henderson County case record is the better source for what was actually filed and how the charge ended.
What a Henderson County Criminal Record Shows
A record's fields depend on its layer. A Texas CCH organizes identity and fingerprint-supported event cycles, while a Henderson County case file centers on a cause number, court, parties, filed charges, docket events, and disposition. Public records often omit full birth dates, Social Security numbers, account data, protected victim facts, and juvenile information. Absence from a public screen is not proof that no restricted or unreported record exists.
| Name and identifiers | Names, aliases, limited demographics, and agency numbers used to distinguish one person from another. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Event date, arresting agency, intake charge, booking number, bond, custody, release, or transfer information. |
| Filed charge | Offense description, statute, degree or class, count, and charging instrument in the court file. |
| Docket and disposition | Hearings, motions, pleas, dismissal, acquittal, deferred adjudication, conviction, or another formal outcome. |
| Sentence and supervision | Jail or prison term, fine, costs, restitution, community supervision, and court-imposed conditions when public. |
| Custody source | County jail for local custody, TDCJ for sentenced state custody, or BOP for sentenced federal custody. |
Read “pending” as unresolved and “disposed” as an outcome having been entered. “Dismissed” is not a conviction. “Deferred adjudication” delays a finding of guilt while court conditions are served, but Texas may still make the event public unless a legal restriction applies.
Henderson County Criminal Cause Numbers
Henderson County's published court rules used letters to identify district assignment: A for the 173rd District Court, B for the 392nd, and C for the 3rd. Older examples use a year-letter-number form such as 99A-001. Current Odyssey examples can look different, including a district felony pattern such as CR23-0075-3 or a county-court-at-law pattern such as 2023-0141CCL2. Use the live case header to confirm the assigned court rather than forcing an old convention onto a new cause number.
Several terms help decode the file:
- Docket
- The dated index of activity in a criminal court case.
- Information
- A prosecutor-filed charging paper commonly used for a misdemeanor.
- Indictment
- A grand jury's written accusation supporting a felony prosecution.
- Capias
- A court order to take a person into custody after a procedural event.
- Disposition
- The formal result of a charge or case.
The cause number also tells the clerk which record set to search. It does not prove that every document image is online. Email the District Clerk for a district-file copy, and contact the County Clerk Criminal Division for a misdemeanor file.
Note: The County Clerk stopped offering bulk court-case data after August 9, 2017, so researchers should request identified records instead of assuming a bulk feed.
Public Access Laws
The Texas Public Information Act applies to existing information held by governmental bodies. It does not require the sheriff to answer legal questions, perform research, or create a new report. Government Code Section 552.221 calls for prompt production, not an automatic ten-day wait. If an exception is not already established, the agency generally seeks an Attorney General decision within ten business days under Section 552.301. Active investigations, juvenile data, victim information, medical details, biometric data, and protected identifiers can be withheld or redacted under applicable law.
Key Texas laws:
Government Code Chapter 552 sets public-information duties and exceptions.
Government Code Chapter 411 controls public criminal-history release and nondisclosure.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A governs expunction.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 62 governs sex-offender registration and public registry data.
Court records follow judicial access rules as well as the clerk's procedures, so an ordinary TPIA request is not a substitute for ordering a filed court document. Send each request to the office that holds the actual Henderson County criminal record.
Henderson County Criminal Records Requests
When a portal is down or a document is not online, make a focused request. For a sheriff-created report, contact sheriff administration at 206-A North Murchison Street, 903-675-5128, during weekday administration hours. A useful request identifies the incident or offense report number, date, time, place, involved agency, locating names, exact portions wanted, and whether inspection, electronic copy, paper copy, or certification is sought. The county also publishes an official FOIA request route, though its form fields could not be inspected during research.
The Texas Attorney General open-government office explains the TPIA and complaint process.
The state guidance is a procedural fallback, not a record database, and the Attorney General does not keep the county's police or court file.
The sheriff page does not publish a fixed report-copy fee, formal online records portal, clearance-letter product, or guaranteed turnaround. Phone contact may confirm routing, but it may not count as a formal written request. Fax is listed at 903-677-6344; confirm receipt and whether that channel is accepted for the request.
Sealed, Expunged & Restricted
Texas uses two distinct forms of relief. Expunction under Chapter 55A can direct the destruction or return of qualifying records. Eligibility depends on the outcome, offense, timing, and statutory route, with examples that include certain acquittals, pardons, and dismissed or no-charge arrests after required conditions. It is not available for every case. An order of nondisclosure restricts ordinary public access to qualifying criminal-history information while allowing access by listed governmental entities.
Start a district-court filing question with the Henderson County District Clerk. A current local base filing fee was not located, so obtain a clerk quote. If an order is granted, secure certified copies, confirm notice went to the named agencies, allow processing time, and review both court and DPS results. If data remains, the certified order supports a correction request to the reporting office or DPS.
Juvenile sealing follows separate Family Code rules. Public court files also redact protected identifiers and victim facts. A blank portal result can therefore reflect restriction, reporting lag, a misspelled name, different court coverage, or no responsive public file. It is not a clean-record certificate.
Henderson County Criminal Custody Searches
Choose the locator by custody level. The Henderson County jail channel covers present local detention and recent booking questions. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice Online Inmate Search covers sentenced state custody after transfer. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers sentenced federal custody. VINELink may add custody-status notifications where the participating jurisdiction supports them, but it does not replace the holding agency's record.
The Texas FAST enrollment portal shows where fingerprint appointments begin when an authorized service code calls for them.
FAST is an identity-based background-check channel, not a jail locator, and the live appointment system controls location, time, and purpose-specific price. Community supervision and parole are separate again. Henderson County CSCD manages local court-ordered community supervision. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles makes parole decisions, while the TDCJ Parole Division performs field supervision. The TDCJ district parole directory maps the Athens office to Henderson County and Region I.
The directory helps identify the correct state supervision office, while the court judgment remains the source for the sentence that imposed community supervision or led to state custody.
Criminal Records by City in Henderson County
City police departments create their own reports, and municipal courts keep their own fine-only and ordinance matters. Athens, Gun Barrel City, and Chandler are Henderson County's three largest incorporated cities by the consistent 2020 Census ranking used for these guides. A city citation, municipal capias, or police report may not appear in the district felony search. Start with the city source, then trace any booking or filed higher-level charge to the proper county office.
Athens Criminal History
12,857 residents in 2020 · Athens PD records and Municipal Court channels
Gun Barrel City Criminal History
6,190 residents in 2020 · Police records and Municipal Court at Municipal Drive
Chandler Criminal History
3,275 residents in 2020 · Chandler PD, City Secretary, and Municipal Court routes
Athens is also the county justice hub, yet an Athens PD report remains a city record. Gun Barrel City has a detailed police public-information form and fee schedule. Chandler uses shared dispatch infrastructure with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, but the city still keeps its own police and municipal records.
Henderson County Criminal Record Snapshots
Sheriff monthly statistics give rare local context, but each PDF is a snapshot rather than a person-level search. April 2026 reported an average daily jail population of 325, with 281 admissions and 305 releases. The same report listed 76 arrests, 36 people held for TDCJ, 493 warrants received, and 376 warrants served or recalled. That final combined measure must not be relabeled as warrant arrests. Calls for service, cases assigned, bookings, and arrests also measure different work.
The Texas Uniform Crime Reporting program supplies the official framework for agency crime statistics.
The UCR source should be read with the agency, year, covered population, and reporting completeness in view, not blended into one countywide total without checking overlap.
Henderson County's 2026 monthly reporting is useful for scale and trend work. It does not identify a person, prove an offense, or replace an official case disposition. Use the jail or court source for an individual record, and label every monthly number with its date.
Note: A dated state jail-standards report listed rated capacity as 509, but that historical figure should not be confused with April 2026 average population.
